Best Immigration Resources for Therapists Working With Immigrant Clients

Updated: 1 day ago

Especially right now, many therapists are looking for ways to support immigrant clients who are navigating very real and immediate questions — about legal status, access to affordable services, and where to find trustworthy information. I know first-hand that having trusted, well-vetted resources to share can make a meaningful difference.

Whether I’m providing therapy to immigrant clients or conducting mental health assessments for immigration cases, pointing someone toward credible information or supportive services can make a tremendous difference. It also allows me to stay within my professional scope while still being responsive to the realities my clients face.

For the past decade, I’ve been collaborating with immigration lawyers to provide mental health evaluations for immigration cases, and I’ve come across some amazing resources along the way. I recently compiled some of the most trusted resources for legal services, up-to-date immigration news, and policy information, as well as know-your-rights materials and mental health groups for immigrants and families.

Especially during uncertain times, I’ve seen how the right resources can help clients feel informed and empowered as they navigate the broader systems affecting their lives. My hope is that the following supports could make a meaningful difference for your clients and others in the immigrant community.

1. Immigration News and Know-Your-Rights Information

Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC)

The Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC) is one of the most respected nonprofit organizations providing immigration law education and community resources.

What makes ILRC valuable:
  • Up-to-date immigration news and policy information

  • Know-your-rights materials for immigrants and families

  • Community education resources in multiple languages

  • Practical guides for navigating immigration processes

  • Resources designed specifically for community members, not just attorneys

Therapists can share ILRC materials with clients who are seeking reliable, non-alarmist information about immigration changes or their rights. Many clinicians find ILRC’s Know Your Rights during ICE encounters materials especially helpful for clients experiencing fear around enforcement.

Best for: Clients who are anxious about policy changes, raids, or their legal rights.

2. Low-Fee and Free Immigration Legal Help

National Immigration Legal Services Directory

The National Immigration Legal Services Directory, maintained by the Immigration Advocates Network, is a searchable database of nonprofit organizations that provide low-cost or free immigration legal assistance.

Why this directory is so helpful:
  • Nationwide coverage across the United States

  • Focus on nonprofit, trusted legal providers

  • Searchable by ZIP code, state, and type of service

  • Helps clients avoid immigration scams and notarios

  • Regularly updated listings

Only nonprofit organizations offering free or low-cost immigration services are included, which helps users find vetted help.

This is an excellent first stop when a client says, “I need an immigration lawyer but can’t afford one.”

Best for: Clients seeking legitimate, affordable immigration legal support.

3. Mental Health and Wellness Support for Undocumented Clients

Immigrants Rising

Immigrants Rising mental health resources offers extensive support specifically for undocumented individuals, including wellness toolkits, support groups, and educational resources.

The organization focuses on helping undocumented individuals pursue education, careers, and well-being through accessible support tools.

Why therapists often recommend it:
  • Wellness resources tailored to undocumented experiences

  • Virtual support and community spaces

  • Education and career guidance

  • Entrepreneurship resources

  • Resources for LGBTQ individuals, as well as Wellness Support Groups

Immigrants Rising is particularly helpful for students, young adults, and high-functioning clients navigating the emotional weight of living with legal uncertainty.

Best for: Undocumented clients, especially students and young adults seeking community and emotional support.

4. Affordable Therapy Options

Open Path Psychotherapy Collective

The Open Path Psychotherapy Collective is a nonprofit network that connects clients with therapists offering significantly reduced-fee sessions.

Key benefits:
  • Individual sessions typically $30–$70

  • Couples/family sessions typically $30–$80

  • Nationwide therapist network

  • Both in-person and telehealth options

  • One-time lifetime membership fee for clients

Open Path can be an especially helpful resource when immigrant clients lose insurance coverage, are between jobs, or need longer-term affordable care beyond what your practice can provide. For therapists conducting immigration evaluations, it can offer a valuable referral option for clients who need ongoing low-cost therapy.

Best for: Clients needing ongoing therapy at a reduced rate.

5. Finding Therapists for Immigration Evaluations

Immigration Evaluation Therapists Directory

For clients working with immigration attorneys, psychological immigration evaluations may be an important part of their case. In these situations, working with a clinician who understands the unique clinical and legal components of immigration evaluations is essential.

The Immigration Evaluation Therapists Directory is a nationwide search tool that helps individuals and attorneys locate mental health professionals who specialize in immigration psychological evaluations. The directory allows users to search for therapists in their state and connect directly with providers.

Why this resource is helpful:
  • Connects clients and attorneys with trained immigration evaluators

  • Searchable by location, language, and evaluation type

  • Focused specifically on immigration-related assessments

  • Supports access to culturally responsive providers

Best for: Clients or attorneys who need a qualified therapist to complete an immigration psychological evaluation.

Supporting immigrant clients is more important than ever, and having the right resources at your fingertips can make a meaningful difference. If you’d like to continue the conversation and connect with other clinicians doing this work, you’re warmly invited to join the Curious About Immigration Evaluations Facebook group. It’s a space where therapists share questions, insights, and practical guidance around immigration evaluations and culturally responsive care.
